U.S. President Barack Obama has congratulated former South African President Nelson Mandela on the eve of his 93rd birthday.
In a statement issued Sunday, the U.S. president called Mr. Mandela “a beacon for the global community, and for all who work for democracy, justice and reconciliation.”
Mr. Obama praised him for devoting his life to public service.
First lady Michelle Obama and her daughters Sasha and Malia met Mr. Mandela last month during a visit to South Africa.
In 2009, the United States and 192 other United Nations members designated Mr. Mandela's birthday, July 18, as Nelson Mandela International Day.
