Indonesian Miners End Walkout at Freeport Mine

Workers at a U.S.-owned gold and copper mine in Indonesia's Papua province have ended their nearly two-week old strike after reaching an agreement with management.
About 8,000 miners returned to work Wednesday at the Freeport McMorRan mine, two days after officials there agreed to begin negotiating with the miners' union on pay.
The miners, who make $1.50 an hour, walked off the job July 4 to demand they be paid wages equal to those paid to Freeport miners in other countries, and to protest the firing of six other workers.
The Freeport mine is one of the largest copper producers in the world and sits atop some of the world's richest gold reserves.
It is the largest single taxpayer to the Indonesian government, having paid on average more than $1 billion a year to the Jakarta government since 1991.
