Friends and associates of Aung San Suu Kyi say the Burmese democracy campaigner will attend a ceremony Tuesday honoring her liberation hero father for the first time in nine years.
The colleagues said Monday that Aung San Suu Kyi has received an invitation to attend the ceremony from the government and has decided to attend.
The ceremony is held in Rangoon every year, but the Nobel Peace laureate emerged from eight years of house arrest only in November. Since then, she has been carefully testing the limits of her freedom with a handful of interviews, carefully measured political statements and a four-day, non-political visit to the pagoda city of Bagan.
The annual Martyr's Day celebration honors her father, Aung San, who was assassinated on July 19, 1947.
